These Singapore superfoods will help boost your health

Healthy eating comes hand-in-hand with superfoods these days and more are being added to the list due to their great properties that help our bodies stay healthy and fight off diseases. Yes, in many cases, going vegetarian means healthier food, but not always – meat lovers can enjoy healthy nutrition too.

Singapore has long been a place where healthy eating has been taken seriously and superfoods have been incorporated in many restaurant menus. But which superfoods and super-healthy ingredients can you find in Singapore's cuisine?

Purslane is native to Singapore and although classed as a weed in other countries, this plant is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and calcium, and is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant herb. It can be used in a stir-fry or a substitute for other leaves like rocket or spinach.

2.Purple fruits and vegetables

Seek out purple fruits and vegetables as this purple coloring boasts flavonoids which are high in antioxidants that are known for reducing blood pressure, preventing cancer and reducing inflammation. The depth of the purple color is also a sign of the higher antioxidant level they provide.

3.Little-known superfoods

Tumeric is not just a spice for curries as it possesses beneficial anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. You shouldn't spit out watermelon seeds, either, as they contain essential vitamins that can boost your immunity. And algae, believe it or not, is actually a desirable ingredient due its high protein content and antioxidants.

4.Classic superfoods

Other antioxidant foods are kale, quinoa and chia seeds, which are also high in fiber, nutrients, and vitamins. As are acai berries, which have beneficial properties for the brain and heart. Amaranth is a versatile grain, similar to quinoa, which specifically helps with hair loss and greying as well as lowing cholesterol.

Here are three of Deliveroo's restaurants that serve some great superfood dishes:

5.Aloha Poke

A poke bowl is a Hawaiian delicacy that has become popular in Singapore. These dishes are not your average salad but utilize a wider variety of ingredients to create a nutritious and healthy balanced meal. At Aloha Poke, each bowl is served with a choice of rice and salad topped with scallions, pineapple, and lime. Then you select a poke, such as tuna, salmon or tofu, and then choose your extras and a superfood. We love the Spicy Ahi Tuna with carrot, pumpkin seeds, and chia seeds.

This Asian fusion restaurant offers a great range of healthy meals and uses many superfoods in its dishes. Afterglow offers a Quinoa and Spinach Hash Brown Burger, this delicious burger is not just for vegetarians. The burger is made from quinoa, spinach and goat's cheese rolled in oats, topped with macadamia cheese sauce and served with sweet potato wedges and coleslaw.

7.Living Café

The Living Café menu brings together an exquisite range of dishes and they specialize in healthy food, vegan dishes, and gluten-free meals. We enjoyed the Apricot Pistachio Quinoa, as it really is a super salad with many great ingredients. This salad is packed with organic quinoa, dried apricots, arugula, carrot, pistachio, capsicum, red onion, flaxseed chips, and balsamic orange dressing.
