Affordable yet romantic dining-in options for Valentine's Day

Valentine's night is one some people can't wait for and others dread. Whether you've been with your partner for years, trying to impress a new date or simply trying to avoid the commotion altogether, sometimes it's the expectation that we'll all go out and eat luxury food like oysters and caviar and drink champagne that can add stress to the occasion.

If that kind of food turns you off rather than on, don't feel obliged to do the same as everyone else. Take a stand and make your Valentine's dinner one that you'll really enjoy. Take a look at these amazingly tasty dishes we've found in Singapore's restaurants that are affordable, yet still romantic.

1. Cajun Chicken Plate

There's a reason that this dish is the most frequently ordered on Big Bern's American Grill menu. The prime chicken breast is marinated and then grilled, topped with melted mozzarella cheese and accompanied with a spicy Cajun sauce. Exotic in its own way, this one's exciting without breaking the bank. If your Valentine likes the cosiness of comfort food, this is the one!

2. Melissandre's Chicken Wings

It might not surprise you to find that chicken wings feature heavily on the menu at Wingstop, but this is no bog-standard fare. Their boneless wings are made from leg meat, with a light crumb topping before they're fried to a crispy and succulent perfection. Our recommendation is to choose a combo each – like Melissandre's Chicken Wings – where you can pick your wings' flavours, a regular side and a drink and then spread out the lot to share for a Valentine's picnic in the living room!

3. Sticky Bones

If you and your Valentine don't mind getting your hands and faces a little messy while you eat, why not order in some Sticky Bones ribs from Morganfield's? There are five different flavours to choose from, but Kansas Sweet BBQ has a romantic ring to it, don't you think? Slow-cooked over a smokey grill and served with fries and slaw, this dish has it all, including the affordable price tag and stand against etiquette you're after!

4. Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger

For a relaxed Valentine's night selection, we couldn't possibly leave out burgers! Of course, Singapore is full of great burger joints, but our pick is the Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger from Omakase. There's a reason this one's the Chef's recommendation – it's a melting pot of textures and flavours served up in a bun. This dish is a taste sensation, but at the end of the day, it's still a burger, thus fitting the casual Valentine's requirements!

We've said it before and we'll say it again: you don't need to go over the top this Valentine's and there's nothing as romantic as staying in and treating yourselves at home. With all the amazing choice of American cuisine around in Singapore, the only dilemma you'll face on 14th February is deciding which delicious dishes to order.
