Indian on your mind? Here's where to go for the best Indian curry in Singapore

Few dishes capture the imagination of foodies worldwide like a good curry can. Creamy, succulent and with just a little bit of heat or whole loads of it – depending on where your loyalties lie – curry has earned its place as the ultimate Indian comfort food on the global culinary map.

But worry not – the diverse and vibrant Singapore food scene means you do not have to travel far to enjoy a bit of the best Indian cuisine around; and if you are looking for the best curry in town, make sure to check out these three restaurants.

1.Muthu's Curry

The people behind Muthu's Curry have been doing everything right ever since 1969, when this family-run restaurant first opened its doors. It boasts of dishes packed with flavour and a widely diverse menu, which includes Chinese-Indian fusion choices such as the vegetarian Gobi Manchurian – cauliflower coated in batter, deep fried and marinated in soya and chilli sauce – or a twist on the classic staples, such as the Peshawari Naan – a slightly sweeter type of naan packed with coconut and almond paste and sprinkled with almonds, which is an interesting choice to offset that curry heat.

Make sure that you do not leave Muthu's before trying their signature dish: their award-winning Fish Head Curry, made with seasonal fish that varies between sea bream, sea bass and red snapper, served with juicy okra, spicy pineapple chunks and an intense red gravy instead of the usual yellowish one, with a touch more tamarind and slightly less coconut milk. No one knows the exact details of this recipe, which is a family secret passed down from the first owner to his sons, but everyone who has tried it has come back for more!

2.Kurry Korner

Kurry Korner's motto is Indian food for Globetrotters – and they sure deliver on that promise. Head here for a perfect introduction to Indian cuisine if your palette is less familiar with Indian food, but don't miss it if you're a seasoned curry veteran either. You can try out Chaat, which is Indian street food – make sure to give the Samosa Chaat a try. It's topped with onion, tomato, a good heap of homemade chutneys, yoghurt and some fried vermicelli. Or maybe you prefer the Dahi Potato Puri - fried puffed puri topped with potato, onion, and the usual homemade chutneys and yoghurt?

On the mains section, you can find options like Chicken Xacuti, cooked with a rich concoction of individually roasted spices and coconut with the addition of curry leaves, Goan Prawn Curry, made with fresh king prawns in a coconut gravy flavoured with mustard seeds and curry leaves, or Mutton Rogan Josh, a mild mutton curry cooked in the traditional North Indian style.

3.Curry Culture

In Curry Culture, you will find the ideal balance between traditional Indian food and edgy, bold combinations and flavours. The words they live by are Athithi Devo Bhava – The Guest is God – so you know what to expect. Try out the Murgh Korma – delicate chicken curry with cashew and rose flavours – or the intensely fragrant Vindaloo Curry, a famous Goan spicy and sour curry made with lamb, chicken or prawn. If you are a lamb fanatic, make sure you try the Keema Mattar, an intense curry with minced lamb, green peas, and cardamom, or the Bhuna Gosht - lamb slow-cooked over fire and basted in a sauce rich with caramelised onions and tomatoes.

They also serve a wide variety of vegetarian curries, like their Kumbh Makai Palak variation with spinach, corn and mushrooms, or the heavenly Malai Kofta cream based curry, loaded with cottage cheese dumplings. Finish off with a good Mango Lassi to balance that heat and you are good to go!
