Sweet Tooth Or Sour Puss? Singapore's Popcorn Is Off The Wall

It's no secret that Singaporeans are popcorn lovers. We tend to go for healthy foods such as sushi with a large side of greens for lunch, but we just can't seem to help ourselves when it comes to dessert. However, popcorn has recently had a makeover: now it's a healthy snack or a reasonable alternative to chips. Of course, it is a wholegrain – but who can resist the delicious flavours and toppings? Popcorn can be flavoured with just about anything and there are some innovative restaurants around doing just that. Read on for some of the most mind-bogglingly delicious popcorn recipes in Singapore.

1. Jumping Jack – Popcorn Chicken (With Real Popcorn)

Just when you thought there was nothing more satisfying than crunchy popcorn chicken, Jumping Jack came along and started to serve theirs with actual popcorn. The trend for American food in Singapore is crazy right now, with burger joints popping up on every street. However, Jumping Jack has been an institution for sometime and probably thanks to their delicious Popcorn Chicken. It's one of the most popular dishes on their eclectic menu, and totally takes umami to another level. Delicious, crispy coated chicken is sprinkled with sweet popcorn, for a great ying yang flavour combination which will satisfy all of your sweet and savoury cravings in one big crunchy mouthful.

2. Chef Tony's Popcorn – Jalapeno Cheddar

Do you ever get that feeling when you're about to put on a movie at home, and you think "I could really do with some Jalapeno Cheddar popcorn from Chef Tony's right now." Nope? Well you probably will after you've tried it. The spicy, cheesy concoction is perfect for a Friday night in with friends. Crack open the salsa dip and dunk your Jalapeno Cheddar popcorn for an extra tangy hit. Whilst it might have been easy to find a snack to agree on, you might have a little more trouble with the movie. Horror anyone? (Yikes!)

3. Sweet Monster – Popcorn Ice Cream

In Singapore, there is no shortage of places to grab a delicious dessert and Sweet Monster has managed to become something of a cult within sweet-toothed circles. From ice creams to delicious sweet treats, they've got everything to satisfy even the sweetest of sweet teeth. They also specialise in many flavours of – you guessed it – Popcorn! Now, when this popcorn is mixed with their delicious ice cream, you'll find a dessert so delicious that you'll want to keep going back for more. If that isn't innovative enough for you, how about a Caramel and Cheese Ice Cream? Well, that's on the menu too. If you like your flavours wacky, Sweet Monster won't let you down.

4. Chicken Up – Yangnyum Popcorn Chicken

Whilst popcorn chicken might not seem like a particularly innovative dish, Chicken Up's recipe and marination process can attest to its reputation for incredible Korean chicken. They say their secret (no more!) is a long marination period followed by a dip in crispy coating before deep frying for ultimate lip-smacking flavour. Their Yangnyum variety is a twist on an authentic Korean recipe that gives a deep-red spicy sauce, ensuring that their chicken is the most innovative of authentic popcorn food available.
