Feast on Local Authenticity with Singapore Street Food

Hit the streets and eat your fill with the best of Singapore's street food

When we go on holiday, one of the best ways to sample the local cuisine and eat cheaply is by trying out some of the street food. From breakfast right through to supper, there's always a local vendor serving up some cheap and tasty grub. But why reserve that experience just for your holidays? Singapore is a melting pot of cultures and you can find local cuisines from all around the globe right down your street. Finding new (or old!) and exciting foods is easier than ever, so let's take a look at some of the best Singapore street food available to order.

1. Roti

Roti is a traditional Indian flatbread, eaten with a lot of Indian dishes. It's a simple food item in itself as it is made with just flour and water, but it is the perfect way to mop up and enjoy so many dishes. Over at The Roti Prata House, they serve a medley of delicious traditional Indian meals which are served with a generous portion of roti. Be sure to try out their Mutton Roti which will leave you mopping up the plate for every last morsel.

2. Laksa

If your taste buds haven't yet been graced by the presence of laksa, they're in for a real treat. This is a traditional Malaysian noodle dish, reminiscent of Japanese ramen but with its own unique style. It's a soup made with either rice noodles or rice vermicelli and a choice of fish, prawn or chicken in a spicy or sour curry. The laksa served over at Ah Gong's Laksa is likely the most authentic taste you'll find in Singapore and brings together a clash of flavours that work beautifully together and will definitely have you coming back for more.

3. Sate

Sate, or Satay, is a dish to be found in abundance all around South East Asia, an Indonesian snack that's found its way into the hearts of many. The beauty lies in its simplicity: grilled meats served with a dipping sauce, the perfect treat to eat on the go or to share with friends. The Sate Set - either chicken or beef - served at Tambuah Mas is hands down some of the best in Singapore and comes with a yummy peanut sauce. Be warned, it's so addictive you may not want to share a single stick!

4. Dim Sum

Dim Sum is one of the most popular Chinese dishes in the world and for good reason: it's absolutely delicious. These steamed buns are bite-sized balls filled with a range of tasty meats, fish and vegetables depending on what you fancy. Crystal Jade Kitchen has a huge selection of dim sum on offer and we think the Steamed Siew Mai with Crab Roe make a great snack or starter to a meal. Be sure to get in their before anyone else because these will be snapped right up!

Opening yourself up to new experiences and flavours is a great way to expand your palette and embrace new cultures - and street food is one of the best ways to do this. Sampling the cuisine from all corners of the world will give you a breadth of new flavours and textures and, trust us, they won't leave you disappointed.
