The ultimate comfort food, congee is practically a hug in a bowl. Hearty, filling and versatile, this one's always a winner. Singapore is bursting with great congee restaurants, with places all over the city offering up classic and experimental versions of this favourite, so we've rounded up a few of our favourites.
1. Imperial Treasure Noodle & Congee House
There's not much about the classic congee experience that Imperial Treasure doesn't already know. Your favourite congee dishes are all present and correct, from Carp Fish Fillet to the Hong Kong speciality Liwan Boat Style Congee, a plain rice porridge served up with a variety of seafood, meat and vegetable sides. But it's their Chicken and Mushroom version that gets our vote every time.
2. Crystal Jade Kitchen
With no less than eight different congee dishes on the menu, you are bound to find a congee style to suit your appetite here. The Lean Meat with Century Egg Congee is a real treat, and unsurprisingly the most popular item on the menu. Will you opt for this Chinese classic, or are you in the mood for the Premium Seafood version, served up with scallop, sliced fish and prawns?

3. Sin Heng Kee Porridge Specialist
This Hougang Street institution is most definitely porridge central. If you're looking for authentic and delicious congee served 27 different ways – yes 27, we counted – this is your place. If you're overwhelmed by choice, their Signature Porridge is a great go-to. This delight is served up with sliced pork, tasty meatballs, intestines and liver – you can even add an egg if you want an extra protein boost.

4. Hong Kong Wonton Noodle
Feeling under the weather? There's nothing more comforting than a simple congee. Hong Kong Wonton Noodle's Plain Congee is sure to put the pep back into your step. Opt for the Pork Meatball Congee if you in need of a protein boost too. If you're on the mend and you're after all the nutrients you can get, opt for the Hong Kong Signature Congee – this one packs in a variety of different ingredients from scallops, prawns, pig's liver, pork, chicken and mushrooms.

5. Gao Peng Cuisine
The guys here know that you love your congee all day long – for breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack, so you can get your hands on congee until 5pm here. The delights here are all about seafood, offering up everything from dried scallops with fish dumplings and spinach to a seafood and pumpkin combination. If you're not a fish fan, don't worry, they've got a Century Egg & Shredded Pork version too.
